Co-op trialling contactless payment tech

Thursday 12 April 2012

Co-operative food has launched a trial of contactless payment solutions in anticipation of an upsurge of usage during the Olympics. Retail Week reports that the food will be promoting the technology at 175 stores, mainly within London and the surrounding area, where cashless society is most established.

With the Olympics promising to cater to people who plan on living without cash, the Co-op wants to make sure it is well placed to serve them by launching the trial in May.

A spokesperson for the company told the news provider: "Customer convenience is a priority.

"The significance of locating most of the trial sites in the M25 area is that they will all be online for contactless payment ahead of the London Olympic Games, where this point-of-sale technology is expected to be promoted and used prominently."

Co-op has a history of supporting contactless payments, becoming the first major grocery retailer to roll out 'wave and pay' card readers in July 2010.
